I love this, Sara. I have been thinking all day about how after 9/11, this wonderful surprising thing happened: hard-edged New Yorkers reached out to each other and were kind and warm and mutually supportive. Looking for the light in this darkness. Uncle Howie seemed to always be tuned into the lightness. <3
I love this and I know I’d LOVE Uncle Howie. And I want to be like him — and be like you. LMK if you have any Substack wisdom to impart. Today is a day, like all moments after a catastrophe, when we all need to find each other ❤️
My guiding light is my dear kind wife with dementia who I placed in memory care on Monday. She is just as kind as Uncle Howie, kissing the hand or hair of the people at the dementia care center.
Lovely. Reading this reminded me of my Dad. People loved him. I remember listening to him swear and carry on, on hold for customer service. As soon as the rep came on he was kind and joking around with them.
Thanks for helping me remember how to treat people.

Thank you, Sara! Your sweet uncle Howie brought tears to my eyes and gentleness and hope to my heart—both have become rare, more often with anger and despair sitting in their place—this is what we need at this troubled time.
Thank you, Sara, for capturing my the essence of my dad. I needed that today.

I didn’t know him well, but, he was just lovely to me, and to my little dog Daisy. She just loved him, and would jump in his lap. He loved that!
